Machine tubes in 20MnV6 (E470) are usually used in the engineering trade. This is because of the delicate metal removing characteristics and the possibility to harden the tube. The delicate homogeneous composition (fine grain steel) gives the tube a high tensile strength of between 470N/mm² and 700N/mm².
Machine tubes are hot-rolled by using the ISO 2938 or EN10297 dimensions instead of the inch dimensions. Thick-walled machine tubes have better turning characteristics, the external diameter has a positive tolerance and the internal diameter is smaller. The turning sizes you want can be produced during this process, with a very low metal removing time.
Machine pipes are used when these specific conditions are to be followed. Often the quality E355 or S355J2H is chosen as an alternative, a good workable and “weldable” quality, and available from stock. List of dimensions.
E470’s quality is the same is 20MnV6’s and is produced according to the EN10297 standard in DIN dimensions.
